Squicks: gun violence, volatile exes
Madara glared at his sister as they hurried down the black corridor, Sig Sauers drawn in front of them.
“You promised.”
“Not now.”
“I told you it was a bad idea.”
Madara exhaled softly under his breath, his ears alert to any change in their path; which was difficult enough to determine due to the blaring fire alarms, the billowing smoke, and the screaming staff who tried to evacuate from the historic hotel, its stone walls blackened and crumbling in places.
“Could we please focus on the—”
Another explosion knocked the pair off their feet and they instinctively curled and rolled onto their shoulders, tucking their weapons into their bodies. Their trigger fingers remained snugly in place.
Mikoto sighed. “I used to really like this hotel.”
“Then maybe you shouldn’t have dumped your husband of almost twenty-five years for an impulsive, young—”
“Gentle reminder that I did not steal your ex, she’d already left you,” sing-songed Mikoto, rolling back onto her feet and continuing down the corridor, nimbly hopping over some smoking debris and glancing at it curiously. “I didn’t know they renovated this wing. Pity.”
Madara tightened his jaw, his eyes narrowing.
“I never should have introduced you,” muttered Madara, rejoining his sister.
“Oh hush.”
Then Mikoto slowed and Madara pulled up beside her, weapon raised. They inched forward toward the mousehole blown into the wall. Night air wafted around them and they crouched, peeping around the corner before they stepped carefully into the destroyed room.
“The boys introduced us,” corrected Mikoto, peeking around an armoire that had, prior to that night, housed dozens of priceless, antique, porcelain figurines. Her booted heels ground the porcelain to dust as she passed into the adjoining room. “Not you.”
“And where are they now?”
“Probably still at home. I told them I was expecting company and that I needed them to greet them in case I was late.”
“Lying to your own children, Mikoto? Really?”
“When you’re a parent you can judge, Madara. Until then, shut up and help me find her.”
Frowning, Madara did as his older sister said. He could just steal his ex back. It wouldn’t be that hard, would it? His sister was talented, and beautiful, and intelligent, and highly skilled—
Two quick shots popped from Mikoto’s SIG M11-AI before she spun around a corner and delivered four more in quick succession.
—and, okay, an unbeatable marksman, but still. He thought he still had a great personality. And money. Less than Mikoto, but still lots of money. And no shitty, jealous ex-husband or kids (her own age). He was a quality choice, dammit!
Then he heard his sister gasp and Madara was racing forward, ignoring caution and throwing himself in front of her… just in time to see her catch Sakura in her arms and them share a passionate kiss.
“My knife? You brought my knife?” murmured Sakura, threading her hands through Mikoto’s long, dark, silky ponytail. “You’re flirting with me, Lovely.”
Mikoto pressed their foreheads together, her arms wrapped around Sakura’s hips, her SIG dangling from her hand.
“I would never forget it. I’m so sorry, Sakura. I never thought he’d go this far.”
Sakura shook her head, nuzzling Mikoto lovingly. “Anything he can do, I can do bleeding. But this time, he bled. Sorry. I tried to keep it non-lethal.”
“That’s completely understandable,” cooed Mikoto, hugging Sakura closer.
From the floor on the far side of the room, Fugaku glared at them like a furious, bound demon, a gag in his mouth and his feet bare.
Madara glanced around.
“Where are the rest of them?”
Sakura looked up, brows lifting as she caught sight of him. Her cheeks warmed.
“Um. We may have a teensy… complication,” she admitted. She rested her head on Mikoto’s shoulder.
Her lover kissed her brow and nodded. “Tell us all about it, my love. What happened?”
